Input Sprockets

InputSprockets is a cool Apple technology that provides a common input interface for any device that can be used as a game controller. This includes keyboards, mice, and a lot of ADB and USB gaming devices. InputSprockets is usually a better choice than the USB Overdrive if both the game and your gaming device provide support for it, but the Overdrive comes in handy with older games and with USB devices that don't have their own InputSprockets driver.

Your gaming device may or may not have its own InputSprockets driver, and it may or may not be supported by Apple's InputSprockets USB driver. If you see your device listed in the InputSprockets input configuration window (which usually comes up when you try to configure the input for any InputSprockets-aware game), then your device has InputSprockets support. If you don't see it listed, you'll have to use the USB Overdrive for InputSprockets-aware games as well.

For InputSprockets-aware games played with InputSprockets-supported devices, you can use the game's InputSprockets configuration window and forget about the USB Overdrive. One exception is when you want to control the game using your USB mouse: in this case, you'll most likely want to disable the USB Overdrive inside that game by following the step by step instructions below from (1.) to (5.), but selecting "Mouse" instead of "Joystick" at (2.), and then unchecking the "Enabled" checkbox rather than checking it at (5.).

For InputSprockets-aware games played with devices that have no InputSprockets support, you can use the InputSprockets Keyboard settings in your game's configuration window and then create a set of USB Overdrive settings that matches the chosen keys. In this case, the USB Overdrive configuration follows the same steps described below for non-InputSprockets games.

For non-InputSprocket games, you should determine which keys are needed to control the game and then create a set of Overdrive settings that maps these keys to the appropriate device buttons and controls. For games that are controlled by the mouse cursor movement, like many flight simulators, you may have to check the "Move Cursor" checkbox (which disables the "Stick left" to "Stick down" actions). A step by step example is provided below.
