Step by step example

Here's a real-world, step by step example that shows how to create application-specific settings for a non-InputSprockets game or application.. You can follow these steps to configure any keyboard-controlled game or for assigning specific functions to the mouse buttons, but you'll have to figure out the exact keys needed for the specific game you want to play.

We assume that the USB Overdrive is already installed and running. To make sure that your device is controlled by the USB Overdrive, open the USB Overdrive control panel and check out the Options menu in the main menu bar. If your device is listed there, you're ready to go. If it isn't, check out the System Requirements and the Troubleshooting sections.

Before you begin, don't forget to calibrate your device once after each startup by moving the joystick handle or the gamepad direction buttons all the way down in each direction.

PART I - Creating new application-specific settings

1. Open the USB Overdrive control panel (by choosing it from the Control Panels submenu of your Apple menu, or by double clicking its icon in the Control Panels folder).

2. Select "Mouse" the upper left popup menu, which is the default.

3. Click the "New" button to start creating a new set of application-specific settings for your target game.

4. Locate the application file on your disk and click "Open". Note that some games (like Carmageddon 2) are split into more than one application file, and the application you launch is not always the one you play. If you want to create settings for Carmageddon 2, make sure you select one of the real game applications hidden in the "Carma2" folder.

5. Make sure that the chosen application is selected in the left side list of the control panel window, and that the "Enabled" checkbox is checked (or unchecked if you want to disable the USB Overdrive in this game and use the InputSprockets USB Mouse instead). The middle list now shows the names of the various buttons to configure, and the right side of the window displays the chosen action for each control.

PART II - Assigning the required keystrokes

We assume for our example that in this application you use option-click and escape alot. We will assign the option-click to the right button and the escape key to the middle button. You should apply a similar procedure to configure your games, replacing these keys with the actual keys required by each specific game.

6. Select "Middle Button" in the middle list of the control panel window.

7. Select "Keystroke" in the upper right popup menu.

8. Make sure that all the "Control" to "Caps Lock" checkboxes are unchecked.

9. Click in the lower right field labeled "Keystroke:".

10. Type the "escape" key on your keyboard (the Keystroke field changes to "esc").

11. Select "Right Button" in the middle list of the control panel window.

12. Select "Mouse Click" in the upper right popup menu.

13. Make sure that all the "Option" checkbox is checked.
